DATE: Victorian, c.1880

Cool Victorian "pool of light" locket dating from the 1880s. The front and back are formed from two hemispheres of highly polished rock crystal that "catch" the light as it enters, causing it to "pool" inside. It's a breath-taking effect in low light and direct sunlight alike. With silver fittings, and space in the centre to hold (and magnify, on account of the convex stone) a small keepsake or photograph.
