Victorian Rock Crystal "BLACK & BLACK" Intaglio Seal Fob
$1,800.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1960
An unusual Victorian seal fob pendant set with an intaglio carved rock crystal depicting possibly the most famous horse ever: Black Beauty. The novel, by Anna Sewell, was published in 1877 and became an overnight success. Although it's now considered as a children's book, she wrote it "to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses," inspired by an essay on animals she had earlier read by Horace Bushnell entitled "Essay on Animals". It's narrated from the perspective of the titular horse, considered one of the first fictional animal autobiography. The fob itself is crafted in 9 karat gold with fluted engraving and loop at the top to thread a chain through.
