DATE: Victorian, c.1890

Remarkable little lucky bean pendant carved from a single piece of nephrite jade. The stone takes its name from the Greek lapis nephriticus (literally "kidney stone") and was, accordingly, once believed to be a cure for (you guessed it) kidney stones. I'm not certain if it's an example of (quite excellent) 19th century humour, or whether it really was made and worn to help with someone's ailing kidneys... Surely the fact this kidney-shaped charm has been carved from a "kidney stone" wasn't lost on its creator? With 9k gold fittings.
