Mid Victorian Mother Of Pearl "Lucky Pig" Pendant
Mid Victorian Mother Of Pearl "Lucky Pig" Pendant
$400.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1860
Cute antique Lucky Pig charm pendant carved from a strongly iridescent piece of mother of pearl. The carving is of a particularly high quality, slightly caricatured, with elongated ears and snout and original 9k gold fittings remaining intact. Pigs have long been considered lucky, the tradition going back at least as far as the Middle Ages, when swine were considered a sign of prosperity. As well as being omnivores, pigs were easily raised on kitchen scraps - combine this with their relatively rapid rate of reproduction, and the owner would have a near-constant high quality food source. Dating from the mid Victorian period, circa 1860.
