Victorian Lapwing Heraldic Intaglio Crest Singet Ring
Victorian Lapwing Heraldic Intaglio Crest Singet Ring
$2,450.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, 1872
Superb Victorian intaglio signet ring dating from the 1870s. The head has been carved with a British heraldic crest: what I believe is a lapwing (aka peewhit, plover, and tyrwhitt). The lapwing is symbolic of strategy - in heraldry at least - as it outwits hunters by leading them away from its nest; a fact that proved popular amongst those lords/dukes/barons who fancied themselves as shrewd strategists... naturally. The ring is crafted in 18 karat gold with channeled shoulder detailing and English hallmarks from the year 1872.
