DATE: Victorian, c.1860

An incredible antique crucifix pendant dating from the mid Victorian period, circa 1860. The cross is modelled in 9 karat gold, with an amazingly detailed enamel rendering of Christ with a chased star halo. Above is the initialism INRI, which represents the Latin inscription: IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM, or "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" (John 19:19). John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages–Hebrew, Latin and Greek–and was put on the cross of Jesus. It's a superb quality example, and, at 5.5cm it's a great size too.
