Victorian Enamel "Fly Agaric" Toadstool Charm
Victorian Enamel "Fly Agaric" Toadstool Charm
$400.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
Cute Victorian charm pendant with a beautifully enamelled mushroom/toadstool panel, seemingly the infamous Fly agaric. It has an ornately scrolled border, hand made in England in the latter half of the 19th century.
Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) are, of course, noted for their hallucinogenic properties induced by the neurotoxins ibotenic acid and muscimol, and they are known to have been widely used by many of the indigenous peoples of Sibera by both shamans and lay people alike. The toxins are water soluble and, after parboiling twice with water draining, it's eaten in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Probably don't try that out, though.
