DATE: Victorian, c.1880
Cool Victorian Egyptian Revival earrings dating from the 1880s. Each earring is set with a (real) scarab beetle, punctuated by two pearls. They're crafted in 9 karat yellow gold throughout, made during the 19th Century's second wave of Egyptomania - inspired by the completion of the Suez canal in 1869. These green scarabs, chosen because people would associate them with ancient Egypt, were more than likely imported from South America - the Victorians clearly weren't too concerned with geographical authenticity...
