DATE: Victorian, c.1860

An amazing Victorian necklace constructed of finely carved Whitby jet. The piece is made up of three layers, each one features graduated jet orbs, each one finely and deeply carved creating fantastic geometric designs. At the centre and each side of the necklace are large trapezium shaped jet panels, again each one carved with that same charming design. It fastens with a concealed style clasp, has a wearable length of 18 and a half inches and definitely makes a statement.

Queen Victoria, was known for her strong influence on fashion and culture in England. During the long mourning period after the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, she wore only black attire and jewellery. Her gemstone of choice? Jet. Even though it was tied to "mourning", I think everyone can appreciate the allure of jet.
