Pair Vintage Diamond Half Eternity Rings

Pair Vintage Diamond Half Eternity Rings

DATE: Vintage, c.1980

An almost matching pair of half eternity rings, one set with eight brilliant cut diamonds, the other with nine brilliant cut diamonds. The diamonds are set in platinum, and the bands crafted in 18 karat gold - one with an 18ct stamp, the other with a partial English hallmark. You may very well ask 'what's going on here?' and it would be a good question. My best guess: an early 20th century full eternity ring was inherited by two sisters, who either couldn't decide which would keep it, or decided to both wear it in honour of their beloved ancestor. So it was re-purposed into two rings, most probably using gold from another heirloom (hence the 18ct stamp) on one of the bands. When? Again, my best guess would be sometimes in the late 1970s/early 1980s - based on the hallmark. Whatever the history, they make an interesting pair. And so unusual to find a pair of (almost) matching eternity rings.
