Late Victorian "Damp Detector" Pendant

Late Victorian "Damp Detector" Pendant

$350.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1880

A 19th century curiosity... the "Damp Detector". At first I thought this was some sort of stripped back barometer, but apparently they were marketed to help travellers check that their hotel beds weren't... well, damp. An issue I can quite imagine to be common in Victorian Britain, tbh. It remains paired with the original fitted leather case, and works perfectly. I'm unsure quite how scientific the 0-100 scale is, but the nomenclature is easy enough to navigate, your options are: Very Dry, Dry, Normal, Moist, Very Moist. No idea what a "Very Dry" bed would be like, possibly would also merit some money off the room rate.
