Grand Tour Micromosaic "Dove of Peace" Ring
Grand Tour Micromosaic "Dove of Peace" Ring
$1,750.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1860
The most beautiful and unusual antique Grand Tour ring, dating to the 1860's. The ring itself is French made, and features a fantastic micromosaic panel (likely Italian) depicting a dove - The Dove of Peace - on a striking red background. Symbolic bird jewellery often features Swallows or Doves, and in this case, the dove can be seen as a symbol of peace, friendship and the bringing of hope. The panel is surrounded by fine gold ropework and charming pommel details. Black and white roundel motifs rest at each side of the head, leading to the spilt antique 14 karat gold band.
Crossing the channel and into continental Europe, British tourists in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries were among a new wave of pleasure travellers. It was a privilege enjoyed by the upper classes, giving them an opportunity to immerse themselves in European culture and return home with new ideas, perspectives and "souvenirs". The term ‘Grand Tour’ comes from the 17th century travel writer, Richard Lessels, who mentioned term in his book "Voyage to Italy", in 1670. This clearly made an impact upon young British men, and they sought educational and cultural enlightenment. Overall, this ring, a very scarce and high quality piece of history.
