Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1920
Excellent antique religious medallion crafted in solid silver and dating from the 1920s. The subject is the Virgin Mary, specifically as "Our Lady of Lourdes". She's displayed in profile looking to the right on one side, with halo and textured background, and on the other appearing to Saint Bernadette during the course of one of the Marian apparitions that occurred in Lourdes, France, in the mid 1800s. 18 apparitions were reported between 1858 and 1862, culminating with the revelation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Mary apparently told Bernadette to start digging at a certain location, cueing locals to brandish her as insane, until she uncovered a healing spring still visited by school trips and sick pilgrims to this day. The medallion is signed C. Charl (and an AP monogram), most beautifully crafted and a good size at 3.0cm in diameter.
