Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1920
Perfectly formed charm replica of St Edward's Crown in platinum with red enamel. St Edward's Crown is the most important and sacred of all the crowns in the British Crown Jewels, made in 1661 to replace the medieval crown that was melted down by parliamentairans in 1649 after the execution of King Charles I, it's used only for the moment of crowning itself (the monarch's "day-to-day" is the Imperial State Crown, worn for events like the annual opening of parliament). The solid gold frame weighs 2.23kg and is permanently adorned with semi-precious stones... before 1911 the crown would be set with hired gemstones for each coronation. The charm dates from the 1920s, set with diamonds and finished in beautiful red guilloché enamel.
