$2,800.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
A fine quality antique signet ring, with a carnelian intaglio depicting an elephant, with the words 'SEMPER PARITUS'. The Latin phrase translates to 'always prepared' or 'always ready'. The band is crafted in 18k gold with lovely chased detailing to the shoulders. Dates from the Victorian period, circa 1880.
The United States Coast Guard is the world's oldest life-saving service and "Semper Paratus" ("Always Ready") is its theme song/motto. However, no one seems to know exactly why it was chosen... The song's original words and music were composed by Captain Francis Saltus Van Boskerck, USCG.
"We're always ready for the call,
We place our trust in Thee.
Through surf and storm and howling gale,
High shall our purpose be,
"Semper Paratus" is our guide,
Our fame, our glory, too.
To fight to save or fight and die!
Aye! Coast Guard, we are for you."
