$6,000.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1860
This fantastic, bold double sided desk seal dates from the Victorian period, circa 1860. Its modelled as the hands clasped motif, and in rich 18 karat gold throughout. At each end, there is an agate panel (one of bloodstone and the other carnelian), reading "Treu Und Fest"- the personal motto of Prince Albert, meaning "Steadfast in Loyalty", featured on the crest of 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars. This was a distinguished British Army cavalry regiment, raised in 1715 and adopted by Prince Albert in 1840, aka the "Cherrypickers". This was due to their crimson coloured trousers! And they served in conflicts that including Waterloo and the Charge of the Light Brigade before mechanizing in 1928. The other agate panel end features a monogram "EAR", for ERNEST, ALBERT, REGIMENT (or royal)... Pretty cool right? It remains in great antique condition, packed with history and symbolism.
