Mid-Century "The Green Man" Lucky Necklace
Mid-Century "The Green Man" Lucky Necklace
$500.00
Description
DATE: Mid-Century, c.1940
The Green Man is an old motif found in architecture and art across the world. The face is made of, or completely surrounded by foliage, and there is a huge debate regarding the origin of the "mysterious" Green Man. From my research it's a well-travelled universal religious icon seen on medieval churches in France and England, in Celtic forest tribes, in south and east Asia and among great architectural empires such as Egypt, Greece and Rome. He is known to symbolize quite a few things: rebirth, renewal and not surprisingly, spring after a long winter, and the renewal of vegetation. This piece takes on the form of the Green Man, oriental looking stylistically, it's finished in vibrant green enamel. Articulated flowers drop from the "head" and the necklace itself has a wearable length of 18 inches. Crafted in sterling silver throughout, it dates from the Mid-Century, circa 1940.
