Victorian "XXX" Bloodstone Barrel Charm
Victorian "XXX" Bloodstone Barrel Charm
$500.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
Unusual antique charm in the form of a barrel with the letters 'XXX' engraved on the top. The barrel itself is crafted in 9k gold and shows foliate detailing, with the other side showing a bloodstone panel. Dating from the Victorian era, circa 1880
The letter "X" is used on some beers, and was traditionally a mark of beer strength, so, a single X for the weakest beer, XX for a medium-strength beer, and XXX for the strongest beer. Sources suggest that the origin of the mark was in the breweries of medieval monasteries, where the X served as a guarantee of quality for beers of increasing strength.
