Victorian Enamel "In Tempestate Securitas" Saint George Medallion

Victorian Enamel "In Tempestate Securitas" Saint George Medallion

$1,000.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1870

An incredible Victorian enamel medallion with two biblical scenes: the iconic Saint George slaying the Dragon with the words S. GEORGIUS EQUITUM PATRONUS (St George, patron of the horse-men (or lords) - as in the Roman Equites, I guess). And the other features Mark 4:36, where Jesus and His disciples are crossing the Sea of Galilee when a fierce storm rolls in. Jesus, unmoved, remains asleep in the stern while his followers become more grow more and more concerned. Upon their waking Him, He restores their composure with one simple question: "where is your faith, men?" - literally bringing them 'security in the storm,' IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS. The enamel work is wonderfully colourful and exceptionally well detailed. Sterling silver, circa 1870.
