Egyptian Revival Mummy Sarcophagus Pencil Pendant
$1,450.00
Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1920
The Egyptian Revival era of jewellery took place during the Art Deco period, when Tutankhamun's Tomb was discovered, and this piece, a cool Egyptian sarcophagus pencil pendant crafted in sterling silver. Formed as a mummy, it's body is detailed with blue, green and white enamel and hieroglyphics. On the front, I could only work out the letters I, R ,A, Y and S.. Anyone got any ideas? And on the back, I could make out G, N and O.
The hieroglyphics on the sarcophagus included their name and title, and were usually decorated beautifully. The line of hieroglyphics which run vertically down the back of a sarcophagus represent the backbone of the deceased, and was thought to provide strength to the mummy in rising to eat and drink.
