Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1930
Aka the wedjat eye or udjat eye, the Eye of Horus is one of the best known ancient Egyptian symbols, said to afford the wearer well-being, healing, and protection. It derives from the mythical conflict between the god Horus and his rival, Set, in which Set scratched out one of Horus's eyes. The eye was later healed, and returned to Horus by Thoth. Horus subsequently gave the (now magical) eye to his dead father, Osiris, to sustain his soul in the afterlife. The Eye is also said to represent the moon, whose waxing and waning has been likened to the injury and restoration of the eye. This unusual, hand-carved stone cameo depicts the Eye of Horus over a heart background with rays of light forming a border around it. It's probably of Egyptian origin; a souvenir to be sold to tourists at one of the popular archaeological sites, or simply to be worn as a good fortune amulet. Chain, pictured, is included.
