Art Deco Chrysocolla Earrings

Art Deco Chrysocolla Earrings

$450.00

Description

DATE:

With vivid colours akin to Persian turquoise and lapis lazuli, these striking earrings feature carved chrysocolla - a minor ore of copper, its name translated from the ancient Greek for "gold" and "glue", alluding to the name of the material first used to solder gold by Theophrastus in 315 BC.  Prior to 2006 it was considered to be a hydrated copper phyllosilicate mineral, however further spectrographic study indicates it may be a mixture of copper hydroxide spertiniite and chalcedony. The earrings each feature an egg shaped stone, with centre carved out, held in place by a 9k gold band suspended from ear wires. They date from the Art Deco period, circa 1920, the design and bold use of colour typical of the period.
