Victorian Multi-Gem & Enamel "Evil Eye" Brooch

Victorian Multi-Gem & Enamel "Evil Eye" Brooch

$2,000.00

Description

DATE: Victorian,c.1870

This unusual antique multi-gem brooch dates from the Victorian period, circa 1870. It almost reminds me of the "evil eye" symbol, with the centre sapphire cabochon surrounded by the oval shaped halo border. The stone is flanked by two old mine cuts, 0.54ct total, and the halo is finished in fantastic white and gold polka dot enamel. Pearls and red enamel (that almost look like gems!) alternate around the shape, and its modelled in 15 karat gold throughout.

The evil eye is a curse from Greek culture that has been passed through many decades, and dates as far back as 3,000BC.... and even still exists today. It is believed that when someone is envious of you, they can curse you with an 'evil glare' and send bad luck your way. So, protection from the evil eye is something that a lot of people looked for. That's why people often wore evil eye jewellery as a symbol of protection.
