Victorian Maritime Flags Bracelet

Victorian Maritime Flags Bracelet

$850.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1880

A cool antique bracelet featuring finely enamelled maritime signal flags. It was made by Alfred Pegler, jeweller (and Liberal politician) who played an important part in the public life of Southampton.

Each flag has either an alphanumeric designation, or a specific nautical meaning... In this case the former is: K1UL2OO (which doesn't seem to make too much sense). But using the other set of meanings, and a little imagination, we can see that whoever commissioned this piece was trying to send a message:

K - “I wish to communicate with you”
1 - one or in this case probably “firstly”
U - “you are running into danger”
L - “you should stop instantly”
2 - two or in this case probably “secondly”
O - "Man overboard”
O - "Man overboard”

It appears that this is message is intended from someone in love with the wearer, who thinks it might not be a good idea — that they should stop because it’s dangerous and they might both "fall overboard".

It's modelled in 9k gold and dates from the late 19th Century, circa 1880
