$1,200.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
This fantastic antique silver locket and collar necklace dates from the Victorian period, circa 1880. The collar is made up of book chain links, with typically Victorian hand-chased foliate segments. With an extra segment of chain that can be used as a pendant/locket drop, or to extend the total length from 19 inches (the two bolt ring clasps). Suspended from the chain is a large silver locket, which depicts Erato in high relief, one of the nine Greek Muses. Erato was the muse of love poetry, and is often depicted playing the lyre, or holding one of Cupid's golden arrows. The Nine Muses of the Greek Mythology were deities that gave artists, philosophers and individuals the inspiration for creation. The Nine Muses were: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomeni, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Ourania and Calliope. The locket opens to reveal two fabric inserts, and overall it remains in great condition.
