Victorian Enamelled "Effeuiller la Marguerite" Daisy Spinner Pendant
Victorian Enamelled "Effeuiller la Marguerite" Daisy Spinner Pendant
$3,200.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
An utterly charming Victorian spinning top pendant dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880. With six faces each featuring an enamelled outcome, it's based on the French game "Effeuiller la Marguerite" ("pluck the daisy" aka he loves me, he loves me not)... but with more options than the usual affirmative and negative. The words are: IL M'AIME, UN PEU, BEAUCOUP, PASSIONNEMENT, and PAS DU TOUT; translating as "he loves me," "a little," "a lot," "passionately," "not at all," with the final face displaying an enamelled daisy with one petal removed. This one's crafted in 12 karat yellow gold (they're usually silver gilt) with screw on pendant bail that comes off to balance the top when spun.
