Victorian Diamond, Ruby & Pearl Swallow Earrings

Victorian Diamond, Ruby & Pearl Swallow Earrings

$2,250.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1890

A stunning pair of late Victorian period earrings, modelled as lovely swallow birds. Each swallow is set with old cut diamond bodies and striking ruby eyes, finished with silver detailed settings and yellow gold beaks. Each bird hangs from yellow gold wires and they drop just over an inch from the year. Super sweet.

Birds of all kinds can bee seen in many pieces of antique jewellery, but the most common were swallows and doves. Swallows were a very romantic symbol in antique jewellery and were said to represent faithfulness. An item with a swallow on it was presented to a loved one as they set out on a journey or given from the person leaving to the loved ones they left behind. It was a reminder of the love shared and a promise to return home safely.
