Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1920
A cool collection of cold-painted Vienna Bronze miniatures, dating from the 1920’s . The tradition of Vienna Bronze can be traced to the middle of the 19th century. Around 50 manufacturers resided in Vienna and very soon Vienna Bronzes were considered as show-pieces, known as luxury items and very collectable. They were finely detailed miniatures, depicting life-like natural subjects, often cartoon like.
This collection includes multiple animals such as a horse, a parrot, penguins, dogs, a monkey, an elephant and so on... With three little tribe people. I like to think of it as Noah's ark, with all the animals. It includes 21 miniature figures, all finely painted.
Cold painted Vienna bronzes were designed directly by the artists who would shape the casting moulds for further reproduction. A single bronze figure was often cast in separate sections using a method known as "sand casting", and then welded together and handed over to the painters. Several layers of heavy lead based paint are then applied to the bronze.
