Halley's Comet is named after the Royal Astronomer Sir Edmund Halley, who was the first to realize that reported comet sightings between 1531 and 1682 were actually of one single object, that orbited the sun roughly every 75 years. As such, he was able to predict, with remarkably accuracy, the year in which it would re-appear - 1759 - and when it did, they gave the comet his name.
