Art Deco Egyptian Revival Hieroglyph Translator Bangle

Art Deco Egyptian Revival Hieroglyph Translator Bangle

$750.00

Description

DATE: Art Deco, c.1930

A remarkable Art Deco period silver bangle comprising five panels of Egyptian hieroglyphics, each with its equivalent letter(s) in Latin script - a sort of jewellery version of the Rosetta Stone. The order of the symbols doesn't appear to signify anything (in English, at least) other than the word "rock" spelled out diagonally from the top left corner. It's crafted in sterling silver, and dates from the 1920s, when the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1925 sparked a craze of Egyptomania throughout Europe and North America.
