Antique "The Weeping Angel" Enamel Silver Pendant
Antique "The Weeping Angel" Enamel Silver Pendant
$500.00
Description
DATE: Antique, c.1880
This amazing antique silver pendant features The Weeping Angel of the Amiens Cathedral, created from fantastic enamel work. I have never seen enamelling like this before, it almost looks three dimensional, with moody monochrome dark hues of green and blue, and highlights of white/silver. The Weeping Angel of the Amiens Cathedral was crafted in 1636 by the talented sculptor Nicolas Blasset, which stands at the mausoleum of Canon Guilain Lucas de Genville, who passed away in 1628. The small angel/cherub figure shows an expression of mourning, with the elbow leaning on a skull, signifying mortality - Memento Mori - remember that you will die. Its other hand rests on an hourglass, symbolizing the brevity of life. To the bottom of the piece, displays "D'APRES BLASSET- 16.28", and I've added an picture of the original sculpture for you to see.
