DATE: Antique, c.1870
An exceptional antique French Bague au Firmament locket, dating to circa 1870. Bague au Firmament became popular in France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and was made fashionable by Queen Marie Antoinette, who wore her ring almost every day (scroll through to see images).
This piece is crafted in rich 18k yellow gold throughout, the front of the oval locket compartment is finished in the most gorgeous and vibrant royal blue enamel. With 15 small gold stars that cover the oval shaped vivid backdrop- this could possibly represent a 15 year anniversary- and its opened from the back and reveals a locket compartment. The craftsmanship is amazing, with fine ornate goldwork and three dreamy pearls- perfectly matched. It features French marks for 18k gold, and it comes complete with its original bail.
Bague au Firmament, translating to "Ring of the Heavens", a style intended to represent the night sky. Pieces featured blue enamel or glass and were often set with diamonds and white pearls to represent a cluster of stars. In this case, there are gold stars with the addition of pearls.
