17th Century "Perhaps It Will Appear" French Posy Ring
17th Century "Perhaps It Will Appear" French Posy Ring
$4,100.00
Description
DATE: 17th Century, c.1680
Poesy (posey) Rings were popular during the 15th through the 17th centuries in both England and France as lovers' gifts. The quotations were often from contemporary courtship stories and usually inscribed on the inner band; they were given to show regard or as a gift. This charming ring, circa 1680, reads "peut etre que paro", and to my research this is old French, however from piecing it together, it reads "Perhaps It Will Appear". Maybe a ring given to someone who hadn't had a lot of luck with love. It's modelled in 22k gold, with an enamelled forget me not flower at the head.
