WW1 Gold Fumsup Pendant

WW1 Gold Fumsup Pendant

$400.00

Description

DATE: WW1, c.1915

A strange incarnation of the FUMSUP... this one looks particularly alien-like. Also known as a touchwood, these were carried by soildiers in the First World War as goodluck charms - usually given by their sweethearts. This one is modelled in rolled gold, with emerald paste eyes set into the wooden head. It would have come in a little pouch along with the poem:

"My head is made

Of wood most rare

My thumbs turn up

To touch me there.

To speed my feet

They’ve Cupid’s wings:

They’ll help true love

’Mongst other things.

Proverbial is

My power to bring

Good luck to you

In everything.

I’ll bring good luck

To all away –

Just send me to

A friend to-day."
