Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1850

So this is strange on many levels... I can't make much sense of the subject: it appears to be a goat/bull creature fighting a scorpion as an an antelope or gazelle leaps over the top. Is it zodiac? Or something Turkish or Persian? Anyone have any ideas what's going on here? Second, it's not actually banded agate, although that's certainly what the creator was aiming to replicate. Instead it's a glass triplet - a white layer sandwiched between two translucent brown discs and cut with rounded edges to display a white halo bordering the intaglio. Mounted in 9 karat gold, it dates from the mid 19th century (my best guess anyway, could it be older?)
