DATE: Victorian, c.1880

An exquisite silver cuff bangle dating from the Victorian period, circa 1880. The front has been expertly engraved with a cluster of ivy leaves, with textured background giving a real sense of three dimensional space. Per the Victorian Language of Flowers (a comprehensive system whereby different plants, flowers, seeds, nuts, or leaves are given specific symbolic meaning), the ivy leaf represents fidelity and marriage - often accompanied on such pieces with the words "I Cling To Thee".
