Victorian Silver Buckle Cuff Bangle
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
This stylish antique bangle features a Belt Buckle design, finished with fine hand-chased detailing with Ivy Leaf motifs. Both the buckle and the ivy leaf are classic examples of Victorian sentimental symbolism - where certain motifs were known to represent certain ideas. The buckle is a common theme in jewellery from the era, and was known to represent strength, loyalty, and endurance - but more than that, it can be seen to create an eternal loop, especially in the context of a bangle or ring. The Ivy Leaf can be read as "I Cling To Thee", just like ivy clings to whatever it happens to grow on. A lovely piece of Victorian sentimentality, modelled in Sterling Silver.
