Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
An unusual Victorian seal fob pendant set with an intaglio carved rock crystal depicting possibly the most famous horse ever: Black Beauty. The novel, by Anna Sewell, was published in 1877 and became an overnight success. Although it's now considered as a children's book, she wrote it "to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding of the treatment of horses," inspired by an essay on animals she had earlier read by Horace Bushnell entitled "Essay on Animals".
The fob itself is crafted in 9 karat gold with engraving and loop at the top to thread a chain through.
Sewell’s introduction to writing began in her youth when she helped edit the works of her mother—a deeply religious, popular author of juvenile best-sellers. Sewell spent the last seven or eight years of her life writing Black Beauty. The book, a fictional autobiography of a gentle highbred horse, beginning with his carefree days as a colt on an English farm, to his difficult life pulling taxis in London, to his happy retirement in the country.
