Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1860
Superb High Victorian pietra dura oval brooch charged with symbolism. The focal point is a colourful lovebird, perched on a peach tree and looking back over one shoulder at a butterfly in flight. The single lovebird coupled with the butterfly (here representing the soul, as in Psyche) indicates it was likely commissioned as a memorial piece dedicated to a spouse. The significance of the peach is slightly less clear, it was introduced to Europe from China via Persia by Alexander the Great, and by the middle ages had adopted some of the connotations previously attached to apples: namely immortality and fertility. Although according to the Victorian language of flowers peach blossom translated as "captivated" (presumably romantically), which could also apply in this case. The craftsmanship and use of different coloured stone and agate is extraordinary, I'm always shocked at the skill of the artisans who made quality examples such as this, knowing they're comprised of cut stone inlays. The oval panel rests in a gorgeous 18k gold mount with infinity/lover's knots at each compass point. Dating from the 1860s.
