Victorian Pearl & Enamel Locket Pendant
Victorian Pearl & Enamel Locket Pendant
$3,050.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1870
A beautiful antique pendant dating from the Victorian period, circa 1870. It's crafted in 15k yellow gold, enhancing the dreamy whiteness of the pearls which are set in a star motif centre. This sits above a black background, with a white enamel and gold ropework border. The bail much reminds me of a bulla, an amulet worn like a locket, was given to male children in Ancient Rome nine days after birth. They were to resemble a lion or satyr head. They were worn to ward off evil spirits and simultaneously proclaim their status as freeborn children. A pointed drop dangles freely with white enamel detailing and the back features a locket compartment.
