Victorian Masonic "Square & Compasses" Signet Ring
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
This superb antique signet ring is set with an oval sardonyx panel, carved with a masonic intaglio symbol. The shoulders feature fine hand-chased detail, modelled in 15k yellow gold throughout.
The Square and Compasses are one of the most recognisable symbols of Freemasonry. They are architects tools, so there is obvious relevance there, but they also have symbolic meaning. As Duncan's Masonic Monitor of 1866 explains: "The square, to square our actions; The compasses, to circumscribe and keep us within bounds with all mankind".
