DATE: Victorian, c.1860

A superb antique cameo brooch depicting a maenad (or bacchante). It's wonderfully executed, with incredibly fine detailing and mounted in an exceptional high carat gold mount - and even the box is worth seeing (swipe right). It dates from the mid-Victorian era, circa 1860.

In Greek mythology, the maenads were female followers of Dionysus. The name literally means "raving ones", and were well known for their Bacchanalias which involved maniacal dancing and the consumption of much wine in order to achiece a state of enthusiasm inc which the celebrants' souls were temporarily freed from their earthly bodies.
