Victorian "Hours leading the Horses of the Sun" Cameo Brooch

$1,400.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1860

An impressive larger scale cameo brooch with a gold 3D thistle mount. The cameo itself is incredibly well executed, and depicts The Hours leading the Horses of the Sun - modelled after a sculpture by John Gibson, 1850. The Hours (Horae) in Greek mythology are the wardens of the sky and Olympus; sometimes described as the handmaidens of Helios, the sun. It dates from the 1860s, and was likely picket up by a traveller on the Grand Tour.
