Victorian Giant Aquamarine Ring

$1,800.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1900

A superb late Victorian statement ring, home to a giant 14 carat aquamarine - a dreamy colour, cut in a pear shape. The ring itself is modelled in 15k gold, and dates to c.1900. It's crazy big. And crazy cool.

Aquamarine takes its name from the Latin word for "seawater", on account of it's dreamy pale blue (sometimes sightly greeny) hue. Like emerald, it is a member of the beryl family of gemstones, and has been prized, since ancient times, by sailors and seafarers - who believe the stone will attract good luck and prosperity on sea voyages. The Romans believed that if an aquamarine was carved into the shape of a frog, it would reconcile enemies and make them friends. Another Roman legend tells that the stone can absorb the atmosphere of young love: “When blessed and worn, it joins in love, and does great things.”
