Victorian Etruscan Revival Pavé Turquoise Necklace
DATE: Victorian, c.1870
This elegant Victorian necklace is made in the Etruscan Revival style. It features five graduated drops, each pavé set with tiny turquoise cabochons, and finished in applied ropework detail. The Etruscan Revivalist movement began in the mid 19th Century, inspired by the ancient jewellery found in excavations of tombs in Pompeii and Herculaneum. The intricate goldwork bemused and enchanted both working jewellers and high society alike, indeed it took a over a decade for jewellers re-learn the techniques perfected by their ancient counterparts.
