Victorian Egyptian Faience Scarab Pendant

Victorian Egyptian Faience Scarab Pendant

$300.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1900

An antique Egyptian scarab pendant, mounted in 9k gold. The scarab itself will have been made in Egypt, and was likely imported to England where it was set into a pendant mount. To the reverse of the beetle we find a Cartouche with hieroglyphs and Egyptian decoration.

The term faience broadly encompassed finely glazed ceramic beads, figures and other small objects found in Egypt as early as 4000 BC. In this instance it is composed mainly of silica (sand or crushed quartz), along with small amounts of sodium and calcium, and finished with a vivid turquoise glaze.
