Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1870

Striking Victorian double witches heart brooch with seed pearl borders and locket compartments in the middle of each heart. The lockets are accessed from the back, and they're engraved with a few names along the top edges: 'Beryl' and 'Edna. Jack' respectively. Edna and Jack's shared compartment is home to two locks of (what looks like child's) hair, but Beryl's is empty. Why? We'll never know. The hearts are orientated in such a way that they appear to be snuggled up together, their borders overlapping. Crafted in 15 karat gold throughout.

The Witches (aka Witch's) Heart was a popular motif throughout the Georgian and early Victorian eras, the witches heart features a curved point at the bottom, and implied that the giver had become "bewitched" to fall in love with the recipient... in ancient times the heart was allegedly used to ward off witches and other evil spirits.
