Victorian Carved Connemara Marble Frog Pendant

Victorian Carved Connemara Marble Frog Pendant

$350.00

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1900

An unusual antique frog pendant, carved from a single piece of Irish Connemara Marble. The frog has different sized glass eyes, giving a comedic feel to the piece. With gold fittings for wear as a pendant, the carving is executed very well indeed. Offered with a fine gold-plated trace chain.

Connemara is a rugged and beautiful region in the west of Ireland, the name literally means "Inlets for the Sea" - describes by Oscar Wilde as having a "savage beauty". The stone that is found in the region is one of the rarest types of marble in the world, with a distinctive green hue it was formed around 600 million years ago when naturally occurring limestone was heated under intense pressure.
