Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1890

Charming antique locket dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1890. The beautifully textured, with blue enamel Fouled Anchor emblazoned on the front, and an exceptionally beautiful rose motif on the back. Crafted in 15 karat gold throughout, with original glass and fittings. "Foul" - when discussing anchors - is a nautical term meaning to entangle or entwine, so and anchor is said to be "fouled" if it has rope wrapped around it or snags on the seafloor, and when depicted like this one it's the emblem of the Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom (a position that, since the passing of Prince Phillip, remains vacant).
