Victorian Aesthetic Enamelled Swallow Locket & Collar

Victorian Aesthetic Enamelled Swallow Locket & Collar

DATE: Vintage, c.1880

Gorgeous Victorian aesthetic movement locket and collar dating from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1880. Crafted in sterling silver, the locket features a wonderfully detailed enamelled swallow and branch, and it hangs from a silver bookchain collar. The locket opens to reveal the original glass and fittings. The aesthetic movement was a backlash against the rampant industrialism and decline in living standards as a result of the Industrial Revolution in England. Taking inspiration directly from nature, it's characterised by floral motifs, graceful lines and curves, often a Japanese influence, and creating "Art for Art's sake".
